JAMMU: A major tragedy was averted in Jammu on Wednesday after three live mortar shells were discovered near the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Narwal area, prompting swift action from security agencies.
Quoting officials, CNS reported that panic gripped the area after the suspicious objects were spotted lying close to the RTO premises. Police immediately cordoned off the site and summoned the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS).
The BDS team successfully defused all three shells on the spot, ensuring there was no damage to life or property. Traffic in the area was briefly halted as a precautionary measure, and commuters were diverted until the situation was brought under control.
Senior police officials visited the site and confirmed that the mortar shells were live and could have caused significant destruction had they not been detected in time.
An investigation has been launched to determine the source of the explosives and whether they were deliberately placed. Forensic teams have collected samples, and CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scanned.
People expressed shock over the discovery and urged the authorities to enhance surveillance in the area. “This is a busy location. The presence of live shells here is deeply worrying,” said a local shopkeeper.
Police have appealed to the public to remain alert and report any suspicious objects or activities immediately.
