SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakeena Itoo on Tuesday said that the government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has completed its responsibilities on the reservation issue, with the Cabinet Subcommittee report now submitted to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval.

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Itoo said that since the formation of the present government, multiple deputations and aspirants had raised concerns regarding reservation policies. “The Honourable Chief Minister constituted a Cabinet Subcommittee tasked with submitting a report within six months. This work has been completed, and the report has been submitted to the Cabinet, which has approved it by majority,” she said.

Highlighting procedural changes under the Union Territory framework, Itoo noted that Cabinet decisions now require the Lieutenant Governor’s approval before being made public. “Earlier, during statehood, Cabinet decisions were shared immediately. Today, once the Cabinet approves an agenda, it is sent to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval. Only then can decisions be communicated,” she said.

She added that the Subcommittee had held consultations with all stakeholders concerned with reservation issues. “The Cabinet has done its part, and now the report is with the Lieutenant Governor. If opposition members have concerns, they should address the authority responsible for final approval,” she said.

On welfare measures, Itoo said the government has undertaken several initiatives despite budgetary constraints. “Marriage assistance has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000, and pensions for old age, widows, and persons with disabilities have been raised,” she said.

The Minister further stated that a 25 per cent increase in disability pensions has been approved in the current budget and is in process. “We are committed to timely disbursement of pensions and ensuring support reaches vulnerable sections effectively,” she added.

She said the government remains focused on implementing welfare measures under the guidance of the Chief Minister and ensuring that benefits reach eligible beneficiaries promptly. -(KL)
