Shopian: As scorching summer temperatures and heatwave conditions continue to grip Jammu & Kashmir, the general public is strongly advised to exercise extreme caution in their use of drinking water. The misuse of this vital resource is now strictly prohibited, with authorities emphasizing its critical importance during this period of scarcity.
The Jal Shakti (Public Health Engineering) Division Shopian has issued a public advisory, highlighting that using drinking water for non-essential purposes is not only against public interest and humanitarian values but also punishable under the Jammu & Kashmir Water Resources (Regulation and Management) Act, 2010.
Prohibited activities include:
- Operation of direct water boosters
- Watering of lawns and gardens
- Construction or building works
Violators of these regulations may face penalties as outlined in the 2010 Act, which includes fines up to Rs 10,000 and/or imprisonment up to one year. For continuing offenses, a fine of Rs 1,000 for each day of continuance can be imposed.
The move comes as Kashmir experiences an unseasonal spike in temperatures, with predictions of the plains reaching as high as 34°C, a level typically seen in peak July. This unusual heat, coupled with declining groundwater levels and receding glaciers, has brought a looming water crisis into sharp focus across the region. To ensure prompt redressal of grievances related to drinking water supply, a dedicated Control Room has been established in the office of the Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti (PHE) Division Shopian. The public is encouraged to report complaints, queries, and issues 24×7.
