Suspended BJP Leader Arrested For Torturing Help, Her Son Had Tipped Off

Sunita, who was employed by the Patras about 10 years ago, has accused the suspended BJP leader of confining her and brutally torturing her.

Ranchi: Seema Patra, the suspended BJP leader from Jharkhand, has been arrested by the Ranchi police for allegedly torturing her household help, officials said today.

The BJP had suspended Seema Patra on Tuesday after a video of her domestic help, accusing her of torture, went viral.

Ms Patra was a member of the national working committee of the BJP’s women wing and her husband, Maheshwar Patra, is a retired IAS officer.
In the video, the household help, Sunita, was seen on a hospital bed with injury marks on her body and face. The 29-year-old woman has accused the suspended BJP leader of holding her captive and brutally torturing her.

Sunita has alleged that she was beaten by Ms Patra with rods and an iron pan. She was also forced to lick urine off the floor. “She also broke my teeth with an iron rod,” Sunita alleged.

The woman said it was Ms Patra’s son Ayushman who had helped her.

Sunita was rescued last week after Ayushman narrated her situation to a friend and asked him to help. His friend Vivek Anand Baskey, Station Officer at the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, then registered a complaint with the police.

After rescuing her from Patras’ home, the police took her to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for treatment, officials said.

According to reports, Ms Patra admitted her son to Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry and Allied Sciences when she got a strong hint that he was trying to help the domestic help.

Sunita’s videos, which are in wide circulation now, have evoked strong reactions. Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais too met with Director General of Police Neeraj Sinha yesterday and expressed “serious concern” over the delay in action against the suspended BJP leader.

Police say they have not found any evidence against Ms Patra’s husband, and the matter is still under investigation.
