SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly saw high drama as PDP MLA Waheed Para introduced a resolution to restore Article 370, sparking heated exchanges and loud protests from BJP members. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather eventually adjourned the session for 15 minutes to calm the situation.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reacting to the resolution said that a single MLA’s private resolution during remarks over the Speaker’s election carries no meaning. “I didn’t plan to make a political statement today. But if this resolution were serious, it should have been presented with broader support, including ours. Instead, it seems to have been done just for show.”

Omar admitted that most people in Jammu and Kashmir still disagree with the changes made in August 2019, which removed the region’s special status. However, he dismissed the impact of a lone MLA’s resolution, especially during remarks made just after the Speaker’s election.-(KL)
