SRINAGAR: In a move that has attracted significant attention in north Kashmir, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has resigned from his lucrative position in Saudi Arabia to contest the upcoming assembly election from the Lolab segment of Kupwara district.

Mudasir Akbar Shah, 38, from Lalpora, Lolab, who was a faculty member at a prestigious university in Saudi Arabia, has decided to enter the electoral fray.

Mudasir said that he chose to enter politics to bring economic prosperity to Lolab and to address the injustices faced by the local youth.“I have come here to serve my own people. I want to bring prosperity to this economically backward region, which has been neglected by successive regimes,” Mudasir said.

He added that the injustices suffered by the youth in Lolab were a key factor in his decision to join politics.

He added that the injustices suffered by the youth in Lolab were a key factor in his decision to join politics.“I felt helpless in 2016 when many young people from my area were detained and arrested due to political vendettas. I understand their pain and suffering. I want to fight for the rights of those whose lives were disrupted by political rivalries,” he said.

Mudasir will face off against candidates from the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The NC’s candidate will be Qaiser Jamsheed Lone, a former MLA from a political family, while the PDP’s candidate could be Abdul Haq Khan, a two-time MLA and former minister.

Mudasir, who is expected to be the Peoples Conference candidate, expressed confidence in his campaign. “I know I am up against two powerful politicians, but there is a strong desire for change in Lolab, and people are supporting me. This is a battle between a common person and elite, powerful politicians,” he said.

A graduate in Chemical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, Mudasir completed his Master of Technology in Chemical Engineering from IIT Roorkee and his PhD in Chemical Engineering (Renewable Energy) from NIT Srinagar in collaboration with IIT Roorkee.

He worked as an assistant professor with the United Nations Development Programme in Ethiopia for over two years before serving as a senior lecturer at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia. He resigned from this position to contest the election—(KNO)
