JAMMU: A 52-year-old woman police officer allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Jammu, officials said on Monday, bringing to light the quiet mental health struggles that continue to affect personnel within the police force.
The deceased, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Kulbir Kour, was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a room of her house in the Lower Gadigarh locality on Sunday evening.
“She was posted at the District Police Lines in Jammu but had been on long-term medical leave due to a chronic and life-threatening illness,” said a police official. Preliminary findings indicate that ASI Kour may have taken the extreme step due to prolonged depression.
The body was shifted to the hospital for postmortem and legal formalities. It was later handed over to the family for final rites.
Police have launched inquest proceedings under relevant sections to formally confirm the cause of death. -(KL)
