SRINAGAR: For weeks, train services across the Kashmir Valley have been running behind schedule, leaving regular commuters, students, and office goers frustrated. The delays, often stretching from thirty to forty-five minutes, have disrupted routines and forced many to seek alternative transport.
“I am a regular traveller,” said Dr Shahzad (Name changed), a lecturer who commutes from Budgam to Sopore. “Since the beginning of this month, all trains have been running late. Our 3:30 train from Baramulla now leaves around 4:45 or even later, and the speed is very slow.”
Another frequent traveller shared a similar concern. “It has been going on for three weeks now. The delays have become a routine problem,” he said.
Students Hit Hard
The disruption has particularly affected students who rely on trains to reach their colleges. “I study at Baramulla Medical College, but since the trains keep coming late, I now travel by local transport, which costs me more,” said Sahiba Rashid, a student from Mazhama. “I request the authorities to take this issue seriously.”
Passengers Link Delays to New Service
Several passengers believe the issue began after the introduction of the Vande Bharat train service in Srinagar. “We are in dire need of Vande Bharat, but local trains are equally important for daily commuters,” said a traveller.
Officials Acknowledge Faults
When contacted, the Chief Railway Manager said the delays were due to technical problems. “The delays have been caused due to some failures in the engine. We are working to fix the issue and have solved it to a greater extent,” he said.
While the authorities assure improvement, for many in the Valley, the daily uncertainty of train schedules continues to disrupt work, study, and life. -(KL)
