SRINAGAR: In view of the forecast of heavy rain and snowfall across the Kashmir Valley from December 20, 2025, Traffic Police Rural Kashmir on Thursday issued a comprehensive advisory urging motorists and commuters to exercise caution, especially while travelling on hilly and vulnerable road stretches.
In an advisory, Traffic Police Rural Kashmir advised that movement on hilly roads will be permitted strictly as per prescribed cut-off timings and daily traffic advisories issued by Traffic Headquarters J&K. Motorists have been asked to confirm road status and travel timings from Traffic Police Control Room (TPCR) Kashmir before commencing their journey.
The advisory stresses that vehicle breakdowns on hilly roads during adverse weather can lead to serious incidents. Drivers have been directed to ensure that their vehicles are equipped with anti-skid chains, have sufficient fuel, and that essential components such as batteries, headlights, and wipers are in proper working condition. Vehicle fitness, it said, must not be compromised.
Motorists have also been urged to strictly follow traffic rules, including wearing seat belts and crash helmets, maintaining safe distances, adhering to prescribed speed limits, avoiding overtaking on slippery roads, refraining from roadside parking, and ensuring lane discipline, particularly during foggy conditions.
Commercial vehicle operators have been cautioned against overloading, over-height, and overhanging, noting that such violations often result in accidents and fatalities. The advisory further recommends that during inclement weather, journeys should be planned during daylight hours only, and designated parking slots should be used to avoid congestion.
To prevent traffic jams and chaos on hilly routes, the Traffic Police said only registered anti-skid chain vendors will be allowed to install chains at designated locations.
During unfavourable weather conditions, vehicular movement on major routes including the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, SSG Road, Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Gurez-Bandipora Road, Kupwara-Karnah Road and Kupwara-Macchil Road will be regulated strictly as per daily advisories issued by Traffic Headquarters J&K.
Traffic Police Rural Kashmir has appealed to the public to cooperate and plan their travel strictly in accordance with official advisories to ensure safety and smooth traffic movement. (KNC)
