BARAMULLA: Sopore Police have secured convictions in three separate cases of underage driving, reinforcing strict enforcement of traffic laws and parental accountability within Police District Sopore.

Officials said three motor vehicles bearing registration numbers JK05P-5708, JK05N-1830, and JK05K-2552 were found being driven by minors without valid driving licences or documents. The vehicles were seized by police and challans were presented before the Court of District Magistrate Motor Traffic, Sopore, under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Following adjudication, the court convicted the registered owners of the vehicles, who are the parents of the minor drivers. As part of the penalty, the registration of all three vehicles has been suspended for a period of 12 months.

The court further released the convicted owners on probation and directed the Assistant Regional Transport Officer not to issue driving licences to the concerned minors until they attain the age of 25 years, as mandated under law.

A top police official said that the action sends a clear message that parents and guardians will be held legally responsible for allowing minors to drive. Officials stressed that underage driving not only violates traffic laws but also poses serious risks to life and public safety.

Sopore Police reiterated their commitment to strict traffic enforcement, road safety, and public accountability, and appealed to parents and guardians to strictly discourage underage driving and cooperate in ensuring disciplined and lawful use of roads across the district. [KNT]
