SRINAGAR: Following the death of a 24-year-old woman after delivery at the Child and Maternity Hospital in Anantnag, national-level doctors’ bodies have called for a transparent and time-bound inquiry into the incident.
Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan, National Executive of the Federation of All India Medical Association and Vice President of the All India Medical Students Association for Jammu and Kashmir, said the investigation must be conducted in a fair and uncompromising manner to establish the facts surrounding the case.
In a statement issued on behalf of FAIMA and AIMSA, Dr. Khan said that if negligence is established at any level, immediate and strict action should be taken to ensure justice for the bereaved family and to restore public confidence in the healthcare system. He stressed that accountability is essential to prevent such incidents from being repeated.
The woman’s death, which occurred shortly after childbirth, has sparked widespread concern and anger among locals, who have alleged lapses in medical care and sought answers from the hospital administration. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over maternal healthcare standards, referral systems, and emergency preparedness in government-run hospitals.
Dr. Khan further said that such incidents should serve as a trigger for broader systemic reforms, including stronger monitoring mechanisms and robust accountability frameworks across healthcare institutions in the Union Territory. He emphasized that patient safety and healthcare integrity must remain central to any corrective measures taken.
Health department officials have said an internal inquiry has been initiated to examine the circumstances leading to the woman’s death. Authorities have maintained that all relevant aspects, including medical procedures and response protocols, will be scrutinized as part of the probe. [KNT]
