SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir’s receipts from sales tax and value-added tax on petroleum products rose to Rs 1,675.10 crore in 2024–25, with half-year provisional collections of Rs 838.30 crore in H1 2025–26, official tables submitted to the Lok Sabha show.
The figures, provided by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell and laid before Parliament in answer to an unstarred question, show year-wise collections for the Union Territory as: Rs 1,443.50 crore (2020–21), Rs 1,858.90 crore (2021–22), Rs 1,542.60 crore (2022–23), Rs 1,621.40 crore (2023–24) and Rs 1,675.10 crore (2024–25). Provisional data for the first half of 2025–26 record Rs 838.30 crore.
Separate state accounts for SGST/UTGST on petroleum products show a contrasting trend. Jammu and Kashmir’s SGST/UTGST receipts fell from Rs 39.5 crore in 2020–21 to Rs 19.1 crore in 2024–25; the provisional figure for H1 2025–26 is Rs 10.3 crore.
At the national level, the petroleum sector’s contribution to the exchequer remained substantial. The consolidated figures submitted to Parliament show total contribution of the petroleum sector to central and state exchequers at Rs 7.40 lakh crore in 2024–25, with provisional H1 2025–26 contribution of Rs 3.54 lakh crore. -(KL)
