SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday ordered a formal inquiry into the incident at the Child and Maternity Hospital Anantnag, where a 24-year-old woman died following delivery, an incident that had triggered allegations of medical negligence and protests by family members and locals.

According to Government Order No. 750-JK (HME) of 2025, issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, Professor Dr Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal, Government Medical College Srinagar, has been appointed as the Inquiry Officer to conduct a detailed probe into the incident that occurred on December 8 at the hospital.

The order directs the Inquiry Officer to examine the entire sequence of events leading to the death. The Medical Superintendent of the Child and Maternity Hospital Anantnag has been asked to assist the inquiry.

As per the order, the Inquiry Officer has been instructed to submit a detailed report along with recommendations within 14 days from the date of issuance of the order.

The inquiry has been ordered after family members of the deceased woman and locals from her native area staged protests, alleging gross medical negligence and questioning the credibility of earlier internal inquiries. They had appealed to the Lieutenant Governor and the Health Minister to intervene and ensure an impartial probe into the case.

Officials said the inquiry has been initiated to establish facts and fix responsibility, if any, in the matter. [KNT]
