BARAMULLA: The Department of Psychology, Government Degree College (GDC) Baramulla, observed World Mental Health Day 2025 under the global theme “Access to Service: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” The programme aimed to promote awareness about mental health challenges and the importance of accessible psychological care during crises and disasters.

The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohammad Shafi Lone, Principal, GDC Baramulla, who underscored the importance of mental well-being and called for strengthening support systems to ensure timely psychological intervention in times of distress.

The highlight of the event was a special lecture by Dr. Mudasir Hassan, Assistant Professor and Clinical Psychologist, Government Medical College, Baramulla. He discussed the psychological consequences of catastrophes, coping mechanisms, and the integration of mental health services in emergency response systems.

The day featured several interactive and creative sessions, including a “Vent-Out Session” — a safe space for students to share their feelings and experiences — followed by a skit performed by students to promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma. A Mandala Art Activity was also conducted, allowing students to express emotions and engage in mindfulness through art.

The programme was anchored by Fazilah Hameed and Taiba Islam Wani, BA (Honors) 7th Semester students of Psychology, while Khushboo Parveena, MA Psychology 1st Semester student, assisted in planning and facilitating the Vent-Out and Mandala Art sessions. Mohammad Mateen Mushtaq, a BA (Honors) 1st Semester student, delivered a brief but thought-provoking speech on the need for mental health awareness.

Dr. Aaliya Akhtar proposed the vote of thanks, acknowledging the support of the principal, guest speaker, faculty, and students.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Abdul Majeed Bhat and Dr. Aaliya Akhtar along with other faculty members of the Department of Psychology.
