Shopian: In a landmark initiative aimed at promoting self-employment and economic development, the District Administration Shopian today organized a Mega Awareness-cum-Employment Mela at Government Degree College Shopian. The event provided a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly the youth, to explore self-employment opportunities and government schemes.

The Mela was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, and witnessed the participation of over 5,000 youth. Various departments offering self-employment avenues, service-based organizations, financial institutions, business entrepreneurs, and progressive farmers set up stalls showcasing their products and services. These stalls also facilitated on-spot registration for approximately 1,000 beneficiaries.

During the event, local residents expressed their appreciation for the administration’s efforts. Speaking to Press Exclusive, a local resident said, “First time I saw this type of mela in Shopian. Under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, the district is touching the sky.” He added, “We are very happy to see such programs in Shopian. The district administration is providing every helping hand to locals.”

The DC inspected the stalls and interacted with staff and successful entrepreneurs, seeking feedback on the implementation of various schemes. The event also served as a marketplace, where farmers and business establishments showcased and sold their products, receiving an enthusiastic public response.

Highlighting the objectives of the camp, DC Shopian emphasized the importance of such events in enabling the youth to explore self-employment opportunities. He encouraged participants to register for various schemes and venture into manufacturing, services, and other business domains for livelihood generation.

As part of the distribution ceremony, the DC handed over sanction letters for Reefer Vans under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) to three beneficiaries, keys of commercial vehicles to two beneficiaries under the Mumkin scheme, and sanction letters under PMEGP to two beneficiaries.

Mela also addressed broader social issues, with the DC urging public cooperation in combating drug abuse and other social evils to enhance governance in the district.

The success stories shared by established entrepreneurs inspired the youth and added immense value to the event, motivating them to pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

The initiative marks a significant step towards empowering the youth of Shopian and fostering economic and social development in the district.
