SRINAGAR: Dense fog at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport led to the cancellation of 110 flights and delays for over 200 services on Monday, disrupting travel across northern India amid winter weather woes. NDTV reported that 59 arrivals and 51 departures were axed due to low visibility, with an average delay of 26 minutes for remaining flights per Flightradar24 data. IndiGo, the worst-hit carrier, listed multiple cancellations from Delhi to cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, urging passengers to check statuses or seek refunds via its app.

Airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) activated low-visibility procedures (LVP), slowing operations as fog reduced visibility below safe thresholds, according to India Today. The disruptions rippled nationwide, affecting Srinagar, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru, with over 370 flights delayed earlier in the day, per Economic Times. Travel and Tour World noted IndiGo’s prior cancellations of 60+ flights on December 21.

Passengers faced long waits, with some rerouted or grounded; Hindustan Times reported over 150 delays by mid-morning, advising flexibility amid forecasts of ongoing fog.

Officials blamed cold wave conditions typical for December, with no quick resolution expected; aviation experts called for better contingency planning. IndiGo assured support, but stranded travellers voiced frustration on social media. -(KL)
