SRINAGAR: Member of Legislative Assembly Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra has raised serious concern over the growing cancer crisis in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the disease has claimed far more lives than decades of conflict in the region.

In a post on X, Parra said that cancer has caused nearly 67,000 deaths in just the last five years, while conflict-related fatalities stand at around 67,000 over the past 30 years in J&K.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the MLA said that the “biggest battles are often the ones we don’t see,” pointing out that families, particularly from poorer sections, are being forced to sell land and other assets to seek treatment outside Kashmir.

He attributed this distress to the overburdened healthcare system and lack of adequate capacity in local hospitals, terming it a serious health and governance crisis that cannot be ignored. Tagging the Chief Minister, @CM_JnK Omar Abdullah, Parra urged the government to take immediate steps to address the issue and strengthen cancer care facilities in the region.

“The government needs to act urgently to tackle this crisis,” he asserted. (KNC)
