SRINAGAR: A seemingly routine social-media outreach by National Conference (NC) senior leader and Member Parliament Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has triggered a fresh wave of political speculation in Jammu & Kashmir.
In a post on X, Ruhullah sought public suggestions on “local heroes” across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, individuals from any background whose character and integrity inspire people. He further asked followers to share names privately if they feel hesitant to comment publicly.
“Who are the local heroes in your societies? … Individuals whose conduct, work, Integrity, Conviction, Wisdom inspires you… They may be from any field of work, but they are the individuals you look up to,” Ruhullah wrote. “If you feel that you can’t write the names in the comments section for any reason. Please share the names in the inbox.”
While the query may appear benign, it is the timing and tone of the post merit closer attention.
Ruhullah has repeatedly found himself at odds with the NC leadership, and even openly criticised the government’s handling of key issues, most notably reservation policies, and pushed the party to take clearer positions on various imminent matters.
In a recent development, the MP declined to join the campaign for NC’s Budgam bypoll candidate Agha Syed Mehmood.
Against this backdrop, the fresh outreach, highlighting public admiration, community representatives, and moral leadership, has fueled talk about whether Ruhullah is exploring independent political ground or working to build a personal connection beyond the party framework.
