Srinagar: Two back-to-back earthquakes with first one of magnitude 4.7 and 2nd measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred on Tuesday morning in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering panic among the people who rushed outside their homes and called their loved ones to enquire about their wellbeing.
The first earthquake occurred at 06:45:57 IST, a local meterological department official said. It was followed by 2nd within few minutes. The first earthquake was at the latitude 34.37 degrees north and longitude 74.16 degrees east, the meteorological department official said, as per news agency GNS.
The epicenter was Baramulla for both the jolts and occurred at depth of 5 and 10 kilometers respectively, he said.
A man was injured even as many residential developing cracks in the aftermath of successive earthquake jolts, mainly felt in north Kashmir parts.
As learnt by Alfaaz- The Words, a man suffered foot injuries after he jumped out of a window in a frantic bid to escape the earthquake.
People, especially in north Kashmir, could be seen rushed out of their homes, wailing and crying, filling the atmosphere with horror.
Many houses and other structures in the twin districts of Baramulla and Kupwara, as suggested by pictures, have developed cracks.
It however is presumed by the people that they experienced at least four successive tremors, with the last two nonetheless with less intensity.
